  44. In March 1993, the TOME of VAST KNOWLEDGE, a sort of database manager for
  45. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons was released.  Sadly, even though databases
  46. comprising all the standard AD&D spells, monsters, magic items and many
  47. other goodies had been collected, they could not be released because of
  48. copyrights and TSR/SSI's unwillingness to sublicense third party developers.
  49. Originally the TOME was released with a few public domain databases, and
  50. was recieved fairly well. However, everyone agreed that the program would be
  51. much more useful if only the OFFICIAL spell/monster/magic item databases
  52. were available.

  54. The Database BUILDER is a response to this demand. With this toolkit you can
  55. build your own databases and integrate them into the TOME of VAST KNOWLEDGE.
  56. If you don't have the TOME, then this toolkit will probably not be of much
  57. practical use to you. Hopefully wherever you got this toolkit you can also
  58. get the TOME.

  60. Unlike the TOME, which can probably be run without ever reading the manual,
  61. this toolkit should be used only after carefully reading the manual. An
  62. additional word to the wise: KEEP A BACKUP of every database you work on,
  63. that way if something bad happens you won't lose much of your work.
  64. Especially keep a backup of the VAST.INI file, because if you mangle it
  65. beyond all recognition and cannot figure out how to fix it this toolkit
  66. will be worthless. (This should never happen, because the manual describes
  67. the structure of the VAST.INI file, and even gives a sample VAST.INI, but
  68. the point is BACK UP all work you do.)

  101. Some users of the Database BUILDER has observed that it is a program
  102. which requires large amounts of RAM to operate (this is TRUE). Under
  103. some circumstances it has been observed that memory resident programs
  104. may cause problems with the behaviour of the BUILDER, a noted example
  105. has been a screen saver which when activating somehow tampered with
  106. memory enough to crash the BUILDER.

  108. If the BUILDER appears to be funtioning in a fashion which appears
  109. abnormal, try reducing the number of memory resident programs which
  110. are loaded when the BUILDER is run.  If this fails to solve the problem,
  111. contact technical support.

  155. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
  156. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
  157. register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration
  158. while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  159. registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
  160. software to an updated program and a printed manual.

  162. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and retail software, and the
  163. copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
  164. below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like retail
  165. authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there
  166. are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  167. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and
  168. distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group.
  169. For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial
  170. disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  173. software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's retail or
  174. Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
  175. can try before you buy. And because the overhead is lower, prices are lower

  347. the evaluation period has ended without registering is a violation of the
  348. terms of this limited license.

  387. a Canadian bank (or a foreign bank with branches in Montreal).  Sending
  388. cash through the mail is risky and not encouraged. The file ORDER.FRM
